None of us are exactly the same. But bicycles are manufactured in only 3-6 different sizes in each model. That’s it. And that’s why it’s vital to have a bike fit done where, using modern technology, the bike is adjusted to suit your personal physical attributes. Obviously you should have a bike fit when you buy your first bike. But did you know that there are other times when you should consider a bike fit, no matter how long you have been riding for?
After illness and injuries
Injuries and illness usually lead to some time off the bike. A cold or spell of flu would normally be two days to two weeks off the bike, which isn’t really that long. But if you have a more serious illness or an injury that stops you from riding for a few weeks or months, that time spent not riding can affect your posture and flexibility. Some injuries may force you to change the way you pedal or sit, which can also lead to discomfort or pain. If you’re off the bike for more than four weeks with either injury or illness, consider booking a professional bike fit for a fine-tune fit.
Same rider, new bike
Although your new bike may be similar to your old bike, it’s unlikely to be the same. The geometry may be slightly different, the cockpit may differ and even something like the crank length may be different. Although it may not be obvious, all of the these will change the way you sit on the bike and the way you pedal the bike. It’s definitely worth booking a professional bike fit to get you into the optimal position on your new bike ASAP.
As you age
It happens so gradually that you’re not really aware of it, but as you age, you generally become less flexible. Sure, there are those who are fanatical about staying flexible and conscientiously incorporate stretching into their weekly routine. But most cyclists find this time could be spent riding a bit longer, which is more fun. As a result you lose flexibility which affects how you sit on the bike. Its’ a good idea to book a professional bike fit at least every 18-24 months to fine-tune your position.
Contact point changes
If you buy new handlebars/stem, seatpost/saddle or pedals/shoes, you are changing one of the contact points you have with your bike. Contact point changes – no matter how minor – can make or break your position of comfort and control and it’s worth having a bike fitter do a fine-tune fit for you.
Different bikes
If you ride different bikes, you need to have a bike fitment for each bike. For example, if you ride a road bike or a mountain bike and also have a gravel bike. Or have a regular bike and also have an eBike. Trying to mimic the measurements yourself between bikes will seldom work. Be certain though and book a professional bike fit.
